Frequently Asked Questions
How may we help?
General
There are lots of reasons Byte clear aligners are better! Byte aligners can help you get the smile of your dreams from the convenience of your home, without costly and inconvenient trips to a doctor. Plus, the treatment is typically quicker and more affordable than treatment with traditional braces. And when you consider that your treatment includes a HyperByte, whitening, your first retainer, and a lifetime guarantee at no additional cost, it’s easy to see why Byte is better.
Invisible aligners are these amazing, totally clear plastic devices custom made to fit your teeth. They gradually shift your teeth so that they’re straight and your smile looks great.
Yes! We now offer a premium aligner system that allows you to straighten your teeth while you sleep! Every night, you'll wear your aligners for a minimum of 10 hours continuously paired with 5 minutes of the HyperByte®.
Based on the impressions you take at home, a custom treatment plan is created just for you. You get a set of custom invisible aligners that moves your teeth safely, a little at a time. After you wear each aligner for the suggested time (usually one week), you progress to the next step until you achieve your new smile. The My Byte app can guide you through the process and help you keep track of your progress. Please note that in order to stay on track, you will need to use HyperByte for 5 minutes a day and wear your aligners for the correct amount of time—22 hours a day for All-Day Aligners and at least 10 hours each night for At-Night Aligners.
Our invisible aligners are made of a BPA-free highly transparent, medical grade, polymer film. Our cutting edge aligners are smooth and durable. Don’t let the good looks fool you though, these babies are high impact, tear resistant bad asses that keep your teeth in line while keeping you comfortable.
No. Byte invisible aligners are cut straight across. This is the best way for the aligners to grip your teeth and create the gentle force needed to straighten them.
Byte is designed to work for minor to moderate alignment issues, including correcting spacing, crowding between teeth and rotation. Your at-home impressions will be used to determine if you’re a good candidate for Byte aligners. If you’re not, you’ll get a full refund for the price of the Impression Kit.
Byte aligners can be used to treat people ages 12 and up. You must also have all of your adult teeth and get approved by the doctor who reviews your impressions. If you are under 18, you will need your parent's consent.
Yes! Crowding occurs when your teeth overlap due to insufficient jaw space. It’s a very common issue that researchers say may be due to years of evolution and environmental change as our food became softer. We recommend getting started with an impression kit so that your clinical team can assess the severity of crowding and create the best treatment option for you.
Yes! Spacing is when gaps exist between teeth. This can occur due to genetics, such as having smaller teeth, or due to behavioral habits, such as mouth breathing. Since spacing may differ from person to person, sending us your impressions is the best way to get custom treatment plan prescribed for your unique smile. If you do not qualify for treatment, we'll refund you the cost of the Impression Kit!
It depends. As there is a limitation to how much clear aligners, by themselves, can move the teeth, Byte cannot fully correct an overbite, underbite, or an open bite, which would require either traditional braces, attachments, rubber bands, expanders, and in some cases, jaw surgery. Byte aligners may in some cases be able to lessen the appearance of an overbite, however, through better alignment of incisors and canine teeth. Get started with an Impression Kit so your clinical team can provide the best treatment option for you!
A dental midline is the line between your two upper front teeth and your two lower front teeth. This line does not always align due to differences in tooth size, missing teeth, or chewing only on one side of your mouth. Aligners cannot correct a midline, but can improve the appearance through better alignment. Get your Impression Kit today and see what your midline could look like with our 3D model of your smile! If you are not a candidate, we’ll refund you the cost.
Yes! Byte can move veneers and crowns as long as they are not on your molars. See what your personalized treatment plan looks like after buying and sending back your Impression Kit! If you’re not a candidate, we’ll refund you the cost of the Impression Kit.
Yes! During treatment, you are eligible for any additional aligners that might be needed to achieve the projected end result. Then, once treatment is complete, we stand by your smile for life! Should your teeth shift out of alignment at anytime, we can have you evaluated for further treatment to bring the teeth back to that final smile.
Your treatment guarantees are contingent upon compliant aligner and retainer wear, as detailed in our Informed Consent and Guarantees documents. In short, we ask that you wear your aligners for the full, prescribed amount of time and hold onto all aligner sets until treatment is complete. Once in retainers, you should not skip days, and should order a new set at least once per year. If you have any questions about these policies, please reach out to Byte Support!
Most updates to your payment plan can be made from within the account provided to you by the finance company overseeing your plan. Please reach out to us by completing a support request if you aren’t sure who’s offering your plan, or if you need their contact information.
Health
It’s a good idea to wait six weeks after having your wisdom teeth removed to start treatment with Byte aligners. You might be able to start sooner if your surgeon says it’s okay, but you’ll need to provide a signed release form from the office where you had the procedure done.
In the vast majority of cases customers can proceed with Byte aligners with presence of wisdom teeth. Customers should consult with their family dentist or oral surgeon to determine need and timing of wisdom tooth removal.
It’s possible. Send in your impressions to find out for sure. If you’re not a candidate, you’ll get a refund for the Impression Kit.
It’s possible. Send in your impressions to find out for sure. If you’re not a candidate, you’ll get a refund for the Impression Kit.
A little, maybe. Just like when you step up your workout at the gym, you’ll feel some soreness for a few days when you start wearing a new aligner. It’s a good sign. It means the aligner is working. If it’s really bad or lasts longer than a few days, we’re here for you. Contact us.
It’s not unsafe, but we want you to be aware that pregnancy can cause your teeth to shift, which means you could need new impressions and aligners. Also, some people find aligning uncomfortable during pregnancy. We recommend waiting until you’re not pregnant to start treatment with Byte aligners.
You can take impressions with your bonded retainer still in place. If our team of Dentists indicates you are a suitable candidate for Byte aligners, you will need to have your bonded retainers removed once you receive your aligners, and before you start your treatment.
Ordering
About 4-6 weeks. To make it happen ASAP, send your impressions back quickly, fill out your account center info and upload your photos. This all helps us move it along.
About once a month, we’ll ask you to complete a “check-in” by answering some questions and taking a few photos. The photos are an important way to let your clinical team know how your teeth are moving. You can do your check-ins and upload photos by signing into the My Byte app or logging into your online Account Center and clicking the green banner.
Don’t worry! The impression kit includes 4 total putties, and all we need is one good impression of your top and bottom teeth. If you were able to get at least one of each arch, then we should be able to work with it! Go ahead and send the Impression Kit back to get your impressions reviewed. If new impressions are needed, then we'll be in touch to get you setup with a new kit.
If you receive a product that is damaged let us know by completing a support request and we will replace it.
For your safety, we do not accept returns. Most products ship the same day they are ordered, or in the case of custom aligners we begin production of your custom aligners as soon as you complete your aligner purchase. Once an order has been placed we cannot accept exchanges, returns or refunds.
Our aligners typically take 3-4 weeks to be manufactured and delivered to you. If you want more details, you can always check the status of your order by using our chatbot—just ask "Where is my order?"
Evaluation
Your at-home impressions will give us the information we need to see if you are a good candidate for Byte treatment. If you’re not, we’ll refund the full price of the Impression Kit.
It might. If your dental plan provides orthodontic benefits, you may be reimbursed directly from your insurance company after purchasing your aligners. We don’t accept direct payment from insurance companies, but we can get you the forms you need to file your claim. Contact us for more details or to see if you qualify.
Dental impressions and proper photos can be a little tricky. However, we’ve provided everything you need, so it should be fun and easy. If it’s not, give us a call and we’ll walk you through it.
Treatment Plan
HyperByte® is our exclusive hand-held device that uses a vibration-based therapy that orthodontists have sold to customers for years. The HyperByte device uses soft micropulses that transmit through the roots of the teeth to the surrounding bone and may help reduce discomfort**. And best of all, it’s included at no extra cost in every treatment plan.
**Preliminary clinical studies of small groups of users have shown that daily recommended use of a high-frequency seating device functionally equivalent to HyperByte with clear aligners may increase the speed of tooth movement and provide comfort. Individual results may vary.
Yes. After we receive your impressions and other information, we’ll send you a 3D visualization of your current smile and what it could look like after your treatment with Byte aligners.
It's different for everyone, but the average treatment plan is 4 months.*
Unless you specifically opted for single-arch treatment when purchasing your treatment plan, we ask that you wear both the upper and lower aligners you were sent. Your clinical team considers the full picture when reviewing your plan. For your health and safety, it’s best to follow the plan as created!
Nope! Byte aligners do not move the molars in any treatment plan. In some cases, we may move premolars.
Daytime Aligners: Your aligners should be worn 22 hours per day, as often as possible! Take your aligners out to eat, drink, and brush your teeth. Other than that, it’s best to leave them in around the clock. Nighttime Aligners: Your aligners should be worn for at least 10 consecutive hours per night, every night. Pop them in before heading to bed, and take them out the next morning. If you ever have additional time during the day to wear your aligners, that’s great too!
We recommend changing your aligners at night before bed.
No big deal. If an aligner is lost or damaged, please contact us so we can order a replacement. Depending on whether or not you’re enrolled in our Byte Protection Plan, this replacement may be free. While you’re waiting for your replacement aligner, please wear the previous one so you don’t lose progress. Disclaimer: Aligners are popular around kids, dogs, cats and the occasional raccoon. Keep them out of reach!
Contact Byte Support by completing a support request - we’ll take care of it for you!
You should wear each aligner for at least seven days—or seven nights if you're on the nighttime plan—depending on what your treatment plan calls for. [Pro tip: Download the My Byte app to get reminders when it’s time to switch.] Before you switch, be sure that the current aligner is sitting completely flush with your teeth. If you've been wearing an aligner set for seven days, but feel like it is still not sitting flush with the teeth, please reach out by completing a support request with an aligners-on photo so that your clinical team can review your progress and modify your treatment as needed.
Yes, it’s fine to keep wearing them unless you’re severely ill or actively vomiting. If you happen to vomit with your aligners in, you should take them out and clean them right away.
For dental emergencies, contact your local dentist or call 911. If you’re able, please also reach out to us by completing a support request so our team can support and advise.
You don’t need fancy tools to clean your aligners. First and foremost, it’s key to rinse your aligners under cool (not hot!) water when you take them out. This prevents residue build up, and cloudy or discolored aligners. If you have a bottle of our BrightByte whitener/aligner cleaner, it’s the best way to keep the aligners clean and fresh on the go. Simply squirt a dime-sized amount in your aligners, top and bottom, each time you replace them. Aligners should be worn only after brushing teeth whenever possible -- BrightByte does not replace basic oral hygiene. The next-best way to clean your aligners would be to mix 50% vinegar and 50% water, and to allow the aligners to soak in the solution for about 20-30 minutes. Then rinse them off, before wearing them again. Using anything else on the aligners, such as a toothbrush and toothpaste, can cause little scratches over time that trap bacteria within the aligner. We want to make sure the aligners remain as clean as possible throughout your treatment, so keeping a solution like this on-hand in case you’re out of BrightByte is perfect!
Yes! We’d recommend using our BrightByte foam whitener, squirting a dime-sized amount into the aligners. We don’t recommend using another whitening gel because it could damage your aligners. If you’re going to use something other than BrightByte, only use a plain, hydrogen peroxide based product, with a concentration of 3.5% and no other active ingredients.
We strongly advise against smoking and vaping in your aligners, as it can cause discoloration or damage to the aligners or even your teeth.
No, please don’t! Your aligners are designed to move your teeth at an optimum pace that is neither too slow nor too fast. If your aligners aren't fitting properly at any point, reach out by completing a support request.
Minor soreness is not uncommon, especially during the first few weeks of treatment! We’d recommend to continue using your HyperByte every day - this can provide relief. You may also use your preferred method of over-the-counter pain reliever as needed! If you have any doubts about how the aligners are fitting, or if you feel that your aligners are extraordinarily painful, please check in with us. We're here to help!
Once you’re within the final 2 weeks of your treatment plan, it’s time to discuss ordering your first set of retainers. These retainers will lock in your final smile! Please complete a support request during these final two weeks so we can review your progress and make sure you’re ready to take this exciting leap. You may also order your retainers solo by heading to our retainers listing in our store.
Aligners should never be worn for less than 7 days. Your teeth need this time to move successfully and safely. In some cases, your clinical team may even recommend wearing each aligner set for longer than the 7 full days to give the teeth some extra care.
While wearing the aligners, we ask that you do not drink any beverages except for still water. Sugar, dyes and carbonation can all damage the aligners or even introduce oral health concerns. And yes - this does include drinking through a straw!
Stop right there! As a requirement of your treatment, all aligner sets must be kept until the treatment is complete and the retainers are received. If an aligner is lost or broken, or if you have concerns about the fit, we may ask you to step back into previous aligners. You can place used aligners back in their original packets for easy storage.
You can find your custom plan in the My Byte app by tapping “My Plan” on the Aligner Wear card. You’ll see how many aligners are in your plan, how long you should wear each aligner step, and your estimated treatment completion date. You can also find your plan under the “Your Treatment” tab of the online Byte Account Center. If your treatment plan calls for more than 15 aligner steps, you’ll get a second shipment of aligners (these are called “continuation aligners”). Please keep in mind that the 3D model will remain the same throughout treatment, even if your plan requires refinements. If you’d like to confirm the length of your treatment plan, check in with us by completing a support request!
We’ll only send your first 15 aligner steps in your original aligner kit. So if your treatment plan includes more than 15 aligners, you’ll get those later in another shipment (btw, aligners beyond Step 15 are called “continuation aligners”). Since every treatment plan is different, and customers may move through aligners at their own pace, we ask that you check-in with us on Step 13. At this point, your progress will be evaluated to make sure everything is moving according to plan. You can complete your check-in via the My Byte app or your online Account Center. Once it’s determined that everything is straightening out correctly, we'll send out the continuation aligners.
We ask that you request your next set of aligners on Step 12 or Step 13 to get the ball rolling. The My Byte app can help remind you when it’s time. Otherwise, we’ll send a reminder email when we estimate you’re on Step 13. When you’re ready, please visit the page www.byte.com/pages/15 to get your next set.
While you wait for your continuation aligners to arrive, continue wearing your Step 15 aligner(s) as prescribed so you don’t lose progress. Also, you don’t need to use your HyperByte while you wait. We’ll send you a notification via the My Byte app and email once your aligners are ready to ship.
During the course of your treatment, Byte strongly advises against any dental work. A procedure as simple as a filling or restoration can transform the shape of the tooth, causing the aligners to not fit from that point forward. For this reason, it’s important to inform your clinical team of any upcoming procedures that could interfere with the success of your treatment. Please note that any non-emergency dental work voids the Satisfaction Guarantee moving forward.
By the end of each aligner set, you should notice that your teeth and the aligners are matching right up with no air gaps. This means that you’re right on track! If you reach the end of an aligner set and are still seeing a mismatch between the aligners and the true positions of your teeth, please complete a support request. In your email, please include photos of your teeth with the aligners both on and off, and specify which aligner set you’re using. Your clinical team can review the information and take steps to keep you on track with your plan as needed!
Make it easy for yourself and download the My Byte app. It connects to your custom treatment plan and gives you useful tools to help ensure your smile is a success. You can download My Byte for iOS in the Apple App Store and for Android on Google Play.
Do your check-ins! About once a month, we’ll ask you to do a “check-in” by answering some questions and taking a few photos. You can complete your check-ins and upload photos by signing into the My Byte app or logging into your online Account Center and clicking the green banner.
Keep your aligners fresh and clean. The BrightByte foam whitener is a helpful tool for this purpose. Please don’t use a toothbrush to clean your aligners, as this will create tiny scratches!
Pay attention to how the aligners fit. The aligners should fit snugly, especially when it’s time to move into the next set. If you see any air gaps between your teeth and the aligners, please reach out so we can take a look.
Hold onto all aligners, including previous sets. If you lose or break an aligner, you can move back to previous aligners to hold your teeth in place.
Feeling pain or discomfort? Your HyperByte is your best friend during treatment! Use your HyperByte as directed every day while soreness is present—this may provide relief. You may also use your preferred over-the-counter pain reliever as needed, and stick to soft foods!
No need to worry! More than likely, this means that you’ve reached the end of treatment for one row of teeth. A treatment plan is usually longer on one row of teeth than the other—this is normal. Please continue wearing the final aligner for that row as prescribed. Then, when you’re within the final two weeks of the entire treatment plan, contact Byte Support so we can discuss sending your retainers.
While awaiting your retainers, please continue wearing your final aligners as prescribed. Then, once the retainers arrive, you’ll need to wear them full-time for the first two weeks! Even if you were previously on the Byte at-Night plan, this is an important step; it gives the teeth time to settle and prevents future movement away from the end result. After the two weeks is up, you’ll transition into nightly wear of your retainers. When it comes to replacements, we ask that you replace your retainers once per year to maintain your Byte for Life Guarantee. The retainers are subject to some wear and tear, and we want to keep them nice and fresh!
Chewies are specially designed to help get your aligners to fit snugly and keep your treatment on track. They can be used each time you insert your aligners, especially for stubborn fitting areas.
Pop in your aligner tray(s).
Starting at the front of your mouth, place a Chewie between your teeth while holding the other end between 2 fingers. Bite down with firm pressure and hold a few seconds before releasing.
Repeat this movement from the front to the back on both left and right sides, biting down on all teeth, holding up to 5 seconds on stubborn areas.
Do not throw them away as they can be rinsed and reused.
*Please reach out by completing a support request if you feel any discomfort to receive support and guidance.
